Colour Night-Vision Cameras and Security Window Film in Midtown Toronto

A Midtown Toronto home received colour night-vision cameras with clear two-way audio, plus security window film edge-sealed with structural silicone. The cameras deter and record; the film slows entry through glass, in our experience by about a minute or two.

Why cameras and film together

Cameras plus security film on the glass has become close to a standard request from our clients. The two do different jobs:

  • The camera deters, alerts you and records.
  • The film slows down a break-in through glass, which buys time for the siren, the alert on your phone and anyone responding.

A camera on its own tells you someone came through the back door. Film makes coming through the back door slow, noisy and much less attractive.

The cameras

We used colour night-vision cameras, sometimes called “black-light” cameras. They produce full-colour video at night without switching on a bright floodlight, so you can still tell the colour of a jacket or a car at 3 a.m. They also have noticeably clearer two-way audio than older models, which is handy for talking to a courier at the door or warning off someone who shouldn’t be there.

The security film

Security film doesn’t make glass unbreakable, and anyone who says it does is overselling it. What it does is hold the broken glass together so it can’t simply be knocked out of the frame.

The detail that makes the difference is the edge seal. We bond the film to the frame with structural silicone, so the whole pane stays anchored instead of falling out in one sheet. In our experience a properly sealed film typically buys about one to two minutes against a determined attempt, and most intruders give up on a slow, noisy entry long before that.

If you’re only filming one opening, start with the back door. It’s the most common way in, out of sight of the street, so it’s usually the best value.

How the visit ended

After installation we cleaned up and walked the owners through the app: viewing live, playing back footage and using two-way talk. A system is only useful if the people living with it know how to use it.
