Backyard Audio and Wi-Fi: Sonos Outdoor Speakers and an Outdoor Access Point

Outdoor Wi-Fi access point mounted on a brick wall

Owl Vision Solutions upgraded a GTA family’s backyard for summer entertaining: Sonos outdoor speakers so music reaches the pool area, and a dedicated outdoor Wi-Fi access point so phones, speakers and guests stay connected anywhere in the yard instead of dropping off past the patio door.

Why backyard Wi-Fi usually fails

Home routers sit indoors, and brick, stucco and low-E glass block a lot of the signal. By the time it reaches the pool, it’s weak or gone, which is why the music cuts out halfway through a party.

What we installed

  • Sonos outdoor speakers around the pool and yard for high-fidelity sound
  • A TP-Link Omada outdoor Wi-Fi access point, weather-rated and wired back to a PoE switch, so the yard gets its own strong signal

The result

Music plays clearly across the yard, and phones and speakers stay connected wherever guests are, with no dead spots by the pool.

Planning your own backyard setup

See our outdoor speaker and home audio installation services for help planning speakers, equipment and cable routes.

  • Use a wired outdoor access point, not a range extender plugged in by the back door.
  • Mount speakers under eaves or on fences facing the seating area, and away from the neighbours.
  • Run the cable before landscaping or a new deck goes in, while it’s easy.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Wi-Fi weak in the backyard?

Exterior walls, brick and distance from the router all weaken the signal. An outdoor-rated access point mounted outside and wired back to the network gives the yard its own coverage.

Can I control backyard speakers from my phone?

Yes. Sonos speakers are controlled from the Sonos app, so music in the yard can be started and adjusted from any phone on the network.
