Security Film Thickness and Frame Attachment: What to Ask

View through a window after security film installation, with the film nearly invisible

Owl Vision Solutions includes DOWSIL 995 anchoring in its current 14 mil residential film pricing in Markham and the GTA. Film thickness describes one part of the installation; the existing glass, frame and attachment detail also need assessment.

Thickness tells you about the film

A mil is one thousandth of an inch. A 14 mil designation describes thickness, not a guaranteed break-in delay or the strength of every window fitted with it. Two proposals with the same thickness can still differ in the glass covered, preparation and attachment.

Retaining glass and connecting it to a frame are different jobs

Film is bonded to glass. Frame attachment addresses the connection at the opening’s edge. Ask how the proposed installation deals with both, especially if the quote only says the film will be trimmed near the frame.

What DOWSIL 995 means in a proposal

DOWSIL 995 is a structural silicone sealant. Its product name alone does not define a complete installation. The installer still needs to assess the surface, frame and proposed detail for the application. Do not assume ordinary decorative caulk is an equivalent substitute.

Compare the scope before comparing the price

  • Is attachment included, optional or excluded?
  • Which edges and panes are included in the written scope?
  • Is the frame suitable for the proposed connection?
  • Are preparation, curing and any return visit explained?
  • What film and installation warranty documentation will you receive?

For OV’s current residential 14 mil option, the published per-square-foot rates include film, installation and DOWSIL 995 anchoring, subject to suitability. Use the glass-area estimator as a starting point; the site assessment determines the agreed scope.

Look for a relevant example

The Midtown Toronto home case shows film on a glass door with structural-silicone edge sealing. It does not provide a destructive-test result or identify a manufacturer-tested window assembly.
